What the ABS Certifying Exam is like

The ABS describes the General Surgery Certifying Exam as three consecutive 30-minute sessions, each run by a team of two examiners, with four cases presented in each session.

Examiners assess surgical judgment, clinical reasoning and problem solving, and may ask you to describe the operation. Formats change by exam year — check the ABS’s own published materials for the version you will sit.

How to prepare

Practice the way you’ll be examined.

01

Say it out loud

The examiner credits what you actually say — the workup, the indication, the operation — not what you meant to do.

02

Describe the operation

Walk through positioning, approach, key steps and what you do when it doesn’t go to plan.

03

Expect the twist

Most cases turn on a complication. Recognize it early and say what you would do next.

04

Read the debrief every time

Every case ends with a debrief of what you covered and what you missed.
